Skip the PhD, the Moonshots panel says — then it counts its own degrees

After losing an MIT recruit to a Princeton doctoral program, the Moonshots panel argued that the next two or three years are the last window in which humans steering fleets of AI agents will be unusually valuable — and that a PhD spends that window badly. Then the objection arrived from their own side of the table: everyone there holds the degrees they are telling young people to skip.

Dave had been recruiting for quantum AI, and he had his eye on a talented student from MIT — "an MIT course 6-1 guy," as he put it, referring to one of the institute's engineering degree programs. The recruit chose a PhD program at Princeton instead.

Doesn't he listen to Emad and Alex, Dave asked on Moonshots with Peter Diamandis, naming his co-panelists. "You guys have collectively like 100 degrees. And would you advise anyone right now to go into a PhD program and miss the singularity? Like, no, of course not. But it's frustrating to watch that happen."

"The singularity" is the panel's shorthand for the transformation they expect from rapidly improving AI. What followed was a blunt piece of career advice — don't start a doctorate, and possibly not even a degree — and then an equally blunt challenge to the people giving it.

Why they think the clock is running

The argument starts from a claim about leverage. Right now, Dave said, a person who can direct a thousand or ten thousand AI systems is "the most valuable you'll ever be in human history," because those systems "won't do anything productive without your help." A year or two from now, he expects, they may not need it: "Yeah, I don't need your help. You know, sorry, don't need you anymore. Get out of the way." So work as hard as possible now, he said, because it may be the last chance to be extremely valuable — and savor it. Working with the AIs is genuinely fun, he added; it is not moving boxes around or grinding it out in a cornfield.

Alex described the same window from inside it. He said he is getting approximately no sleep, because almost all of his time goes to supervising and steering fleets of agents — software systems that carry out tasks with tools, and that still need a person deciding what they should do and whether the results are any good. He reached for a friend's line: the Stone Age didn't end for a lack of stones. He put the window at "maybe one or two or three years," after which he expects AI systems to be sufficiently self-steering that the human role in managing large fleets "erodes to a de minimis role."

Diamandis tested the logic. If the window closes anyway, isn't that an argument to relax for three years and rejoin later? "No, it's an argument for work your tail off for three years and then go lie on the beach," Alex replied. His stated motivation was medical: every year millions of people die needlessly, and shaving even three months off that timeline would mean millions of people exist who otherwise wouldn't.

Emad framed it as a budget problem. The leverage available per unit of attention, he said, is greater than it has ever been and probably ever will be: "You're approaching the last human discoveries. You're approaching the last point of being able to deploy and control these things." But attention is limited and focused, which is why everyone at the table was tired — what he jokingly tried to coin as "cognitive lethargy."

His own year served as evidence for both halves. Two books written, a large amount of research, time spent "in the flow with hundreds of agents" — and then a stop. Last week he set his research agents to an automatic mode and arranged things so he can only read their output once a week, because the work had to go out to the world: a funding round, launches, the research finally released. You can shift between these modes, he said, because you can't be on all the time without burning out; in the right flow you can do more than you have ever done before.

Agency versus specialization

Then Emad went further than the PhD. "I would say on this podcast, straight up, don't do a PhD. If you're thinking about doing a PhD, don't do one." Someone recalled that Peter Thiel had paid people not to finish college, not just to skip doctorates. Emad accepted the extension: don't even do a college degree. "What will you get out of it right now? You will go and you will learn a very specific thing when you should be learning agency." His proposed alternative was to build and show it: gather people, humans and agents, and answer worried parents with what you create.

The defense of undergraduate study that followed was social rather than academic. It's still a lot of fun, one of the panel said, invoking Elon Musk's description of college as adult daycare — and adding that adult daycare is a fine place from which to run massive numbers of agents. Doctorates got no such reprieve. The same speaker described friends with mathematics PhDs who had seen problems in their area solved in a recent batch of AI results and did not know what they were going to do next, and said that "every verifiable domain PhD" — fields where an answer can be checked — is now under massive threat.

Alex said he had made the same case in person a few days earlier, to a government-funded AI-for-physics center full of current and recent physics PhDs. He told them, in his account, that physics is cooked, that they should be reconsidering all of their career trajectories, and that they should give any advice to the contrary "a double think, as it were, before you just go and follow some zombie pattern." Afterwards, on the podcast: "I spooked them. I spooked the heck out of them."

The ladder-pulling objection

The objection came from the table itself, voiced as what a skeptic would say. A panelist ran through the schools: Emad at Oxford, Alex at Harvard and MIT, Dave at MIT, Diamandis at MIT and Harvard. "Okay, so you're pulling the vertical mobility ladder up behind you, and it's fine to tell everyone else who's just coming up. Don't bother with higher education. Don't bother with credentialitis. Just go off and do your startup. And yet, we didn't follow that."

The answer was that their era was different — that the same choice was not on offer then — and that having taken the credentialed route made the advice more credible rather than less. The exchange stopped there.

What the panel added was a diagnosis of why the advice is hard to take. People pursue a PhD because they told their parents they would, or because a sibling did, or because they decided years ago, before anyone at the table expected this, and then worked relentlessly to get in. After that effort, being told the goal is suddenly irrelevant is almost impossible to accept. The word used for the force that keeps people on the path was inertia.

Dave offered a softer exit than abandoning the application: take the place, then leave. "Get into your Stanford PhD and say, okay, I checked that box and now I'm going to jump into a company." The point, he said, is recognizing the moment — that the world is very different than it was before.
