Editor sign-in may also set Laravel’s remember-me cookie if the editor selects that option. Readers do not need an account.
We use a local browser preference, hia_privacy_pending, if a cookie choice has not finished saving. It stops analytics until the choice is saved. It contains no visitor ID. If you choose light or dark mode, we keep that choice as hia_theme in your browser. It is not sent to us.
What analytics counts
After you accept, we count page views, visits and return visits with a random browser ID. An engaged article read means at least 30 seconds with the page visible and reaching 75% of the article text. These are estimates of reading, not proof that someone read every word.
We keep the referring website’s domain or a newsletter source label. We do not store full referring links, search terms, email addresses or browser fingerprints in analytics. If you subscribe from an article while analytics is allowed, we can count that article’s confirmed signups.
Changing devices or clearing cookies creates a new browser count. Refusing analytics means your visits do not appear in these reports. Browser privacy signals, including Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control, keep analytics off.
Your choice and analytics records expire after 180 days. Rejecting analytics removes the analytics cookie and stops further collection. Existing statistics remain until they expire; any link from this browser to a newsletter signup is removed.
